Who are they?

Headquartered in Okmulgee Okla., the Muscogee Nation is the fourth largest federally recognized tribe in the United States with more than 100,000 citizens. The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Department of Health (MCNDH) operates a health system, which includes three community-based hospitals, seven outpatient primary clinics, one physical rehabilitation service, and two Xpress Urgent Cares. 

MCNDH provides primary care, urgent care, dental, optometry, behavioral health services, and ancillary services such as laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy. The MCNDH also offers specialty services such as pediatrics, wound care, physical therapy, diabetes management, and tobacco cessation. As a comprehensive health facility providing services to all generations, MCN has complementary services to assist in taking care of the whole person. These services include Purchased and Referred Care, which provides tertiary care for patients who require care not available in our facilities. 

What projects might I work on?

Two departments at the MCNDH are looking for an intern:

  1. Public Health, which provides outreach/educational campaigns, vaccinations and health promotion/disease prevention services to the community
  2. Information Technology, to support data-related projects.

What will working on projects look like?

The MIT intern’s key responsibilities will include:

  • Data mining
  • Development and creation of advanced data dashboards, data pipelines, data integration and data transformation
  • Reorganization of current systems
  • Create or assist in standard operating procedures 

What skills are they looking for in a strong candidate?

The qualifications for this position are:

  • Currently enrolled as a student at MIT
  • Experience with healthcare software (such as EPIC/Healthy Planet)
  • Experience with data visualization software (such as Tableau)
  • General interest/knowledge of public health accreditation and general concepts/Social Determinants of Health
  • IRB experience
  • Data governance experience
